Recently several people have contacted me regarding the upcoming Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 races.

Many are looking to put a team together for the upcoming races. Racing in Baja requires a great deal of planning, knowledge and resouces. It looks as though we may be able to put a couple teams together for at least the 2009 SCORE Baja 1000 and pool our resources.

If you are interested in the 2009 race as a racer, spectator or pit support crew please contact me.

Meanwhile, I am STILL looking for some competitive female motorcycle riders who would like to form a team with me some day. I am experienced, I can train for this kind of racing, I speak fluent Spanish, and yes I have raced in Baja several times already. I just need to find some other women who have guts and want to give it a try. If anyone knows of anyone...please have her get in touch with me. Someday I'll find 2-4 other women to do the Baja 1000 as an all female team.

Hey,
Im interested in volunteering for any of the 2009 SCORE races. I want to get connected with the SCORE racing. Any information would be helpful.

My wife got the bug, I'm racing the 1000 again. Ironman on 2 wheels this year.
Happy to SHARE resources (wife says she's not included) or info with anyone interested.
First time Baja racers, tell others on this forum what your plans are and what your prepared to do to get there. There's a lot of advice available if you ask.

Hi Jay,
You just made the first move.
Tell us a bit about what you have to start with, bike, trailer, support vehicles, support crew (buddies/family that can be relied on), do you want to team ride or solo, do you plan on doing more endurance races.
Depending on what you start with it will cost between $4000 and $20,000. There are a lot of options and based on the current economic crisis unless your in the minority (cashed up) advice will come in the form of doing it on a tight budget. This means it may not be the easiest or most comfortable way of doing Baja but for most of us it's the most realistic way of getting there.
Last and most important, racing in Mexico can be very dangerous on and off the track, even when you take care. You need to be prepared to accept that some advice cannot be ignored or trivialized. Safety of riders and crew should always be your number 1 priority. You can only look after yourself, friends, and family through careful planning, communications, and commitment to stick to the plan.
I know the this sounds like a downer, but everyone who goes to Mexico racing needs to be aware of the risks.
To end on a high, it will be the experience of your life if you take care.

Warren.

I have always wanted to do the 1000. I am now 50 and still havent done it. This year is my year. I am just starting to look into the how and how much. I dont have a team and am thinking about Iron man. I am not the kind of guy that quits without putting up a good fight. I race in the desert 40+ Expert class, but have never raced a race like this. Do you think maybe I could finish if that was all I was trying to do? Where should I start in getting ready to do this? I would need to hire pit support and plan to get a Honda CRF450x. I can't put the lights on my 06 yzf450'

I would advise finding a team before doing it Iron Man. Just my opinion but it is an awful dangerous place to be riding when you are that tired. For the money and time you have to invest in order to race it, why make it a torture test? But I have no idea of your conditioning, so maybe it could be for you. This year is a shorter race, so a good time to try it if you are set on solo.

If you are going to get a CRF you could try to get in with Honda pits, but they only take a set number of riders and they close somewhat early so if you get held up you have the chance of missing your pits. Probably safest to go with Mag7 or Baja pits. They provide gas every 70 miles or so and will hold whatever parts you give them.

You would also need a minimum of two chase teams. Sat phones are really a must have, but you can rent them. Looking for a team to join up with is the best bet, even if you solo it you can split resources if you find a reliable group. You will need reservations in Ensenada soon, as well, they fill up. I like the resort at Estero Beach the best, but there are choices. Look at some of my old blog articles on my page for some other tips.

I am trying to put a team together for 09, and trying to join up a couple teams to share resources. Stay tuned as we try to work that out.

Jay
